Instructor Development course

Picture

The IDC is the cornerstone of the Instructional Development process. The goal of the program is to prepare you to function as an effective Instructor by thoroughly familiarizing you with the system and its entire diver training programs. During the course, you’ll apply your dive knowledge and skills while learning to use the System of diver education in the classroom and in the water.

About The Course
The IDC is divided into two sections, the AI course and the OWSI program. Each component can be scheduled as a stand-alone course, and complete the entire IDC at one time. During the IDC you learn to manage and adapt the System of diver education to individual diver needs. As an Open Water Scuba Instructor, you can conduct a range of Diver courses, from Discover Scuba Diving experiences to Divemaster. The IDC curriculum is focused on development. You will be introduced to the complete System and learn how to teach all of the core Courses through Divemaster. You will learn teaching techniques in confined water, open water, and in the classroom. You will develop your confined water and rescue skills to instructor level, and test your stamina by completing an 800 yard mask, fin, and snorkel swim (the exercise is not timed). Our focus is designed to prepare you to teach successfully, not just pass the IE.

What do I need to start?
  • Divemaster (or qualifying certification from another organization)
  • Proof of 60 logged dives including experience in deep, night, and navigation
  • Medical Exam for diving within the past 12 months
  • 18 years of age
  • EFR or equivalent in the past 2 years (CPR)
  • You are expected to have your own equipment that is professional in both appearance as well as performance
Subsequent to successful completion of the Open Water Scuba Instructor Course, to become an Open Water Scuba Instructor, the instructor candidate must successfully complete the Instructor Examination (IE).
The IE is an examination in which the candidate is evaluated over two days in the following areas:
  • Dive Theory
  • Academic Teaching
  • Confined-water teaching and skills demonstration
  • Open-water teaching
  • General diving skills and professionalism

Required Materials
  • IDC Crew Pac
  • Recreational Dive Planner, eRDPml, and instruction booklets for both
  • Open Water Diver Manual
  • Adventures in Diving Manual
  • Rescue Diver Manual
  • Divemaster Manual
  • Skill Practice and Dive Planning Slate
  • Logbook

Course Schedule
Our IDC is conducted over a period of eight days, with the final day devoted to the Emergency First Response Instructor Development Course. Most days will include both classroom and in-water activities. Candidates will be expected to prepare classroom and in-water presentations during non-scheduled time.

Course Preparation
  • Complete the IDC E-learning Course (Online)
  • Review the Dive Theory in the Diving Knowledge workbook or take the Dive Theory E-learning (Online)
  • Become familiar with the Instructor Manual
